IC Name: Cygnus Aquila Black Age/Birthdate: February 28, 1929 Blood Status: Pureblood PB: Aaron Johnson Canon Info: Future father of Bellatrix, Andromeda, & Narcissa; Uncle to Sirius & Regulus
House/Year: Slytherin, 5th School Activities: Slug Club & Charms Club Classes: Required Classes + Ancient Runes & Arithmancy
History: Born two years after his older brother, Cygnus was the quiet one out of his siblings, thoughtful and observant, preferring to go along with what life had in mind for him instead of trying to carve a path for himself. Cygnus, as the second son, was rightfully groomed into the position dictated to him, a life which really would contain little more than a marriage and an expectation of producing a secondary branch of heirs. Filled with a certain ambition to do more, but well aware that he would be unable to fill those desires, Cygnus was quickly resigned to living just to exist rather than living in order to live.
He received his Hogwarts letter, as was expected, during the summer of his eleven year, and was sorted into Slytherin without any delay upon arriving for his first year. He settled quickly into his House along with the rest of his family and the majority of the other purebloods that he was well acquainted with, determined to do his best to excel himself in a way that he could, before he was forced into a predetermined life. Cygnus is certain, were he placed in any other year, that he would have achieved the prefect position. Yet, he finds himself constantly falling second to Tom Riddle, a no name, nobody, who has somehow bewitched most of the other purebloods, and the rest of the school, into somehow adoring him. In all actuality, were Cygnus not painfully jealous of him, he'd likely be right in line with the adoration, but instead, he does his best to keep his distance despite the fact that it sets him against all of the others in his year and most of those in his House.
Personality: Growing up the youngest in a family with the overwhelming Walburga Black and the idealistic, outgoing Alphard Black as older siblings does quite a bit to temper one's personality, and by the time that he was old enough to act independently of his parents, siblings, or nanny, Cygnus had carved out his niche as "the quiet one" who spared his parents some sanity. In fact, it's hard for people to really see Cygnus as something separate from this mantle that he's taken on himself because of his reluctance to really express himself in any definitive way instead preferring to blindly agree with whatever issues are placed in front of him and do his best to adapt to whatever situations he's dropped into.
As someone who's most dominate trait really is his desire not to make waves, everything that might be genuine about Cygnus's personality has been buried underneath layers of apprehension and familial obedience. Well aware just what is expected of him and the sort of role that he has to play within the structure of his family, all be it with the pressure slightly removed because of his position as the second son, Cygnus sees a definite futility in even attempting to shape opinions of perspectives of his own. So while he's human, and thus unable to really avoid doing so, Cygnus almost always voices the opinion of least resistance, often parroting back what is told to him or reflecting what he knows the individual he's speaking to wishes to hear rather than what he honestly believes. It's a personality quirk which proves to be difficult to balance in certain situations, particularly when faced with large groups who all want to know 'what he thinks', but it is a difficulty which has been mostly avoided due to the rather singular nature of most Slytherin opinions on the keystone topics.
Where the real difficulty arises is with his family. If Cygnus were to be truly honest with himself outside of his own inner monologue, he'd readily admit that his perspective of things lies well more within his older brother's vision than that of either his sister or his parents: individuals outrank ideals and family ties outweigh family honour. But for someone like Cygnus, familial approval and peace is always far better than any sort of self fulfillment. He's hardly going to be in a position to gain it when he's an adult as duty in the Black family will forever come before desire. So why should he get used to it now?
A weird brand of cynical optimist, Cygnus is the sort of person who wants to believe that everything can and will work out for the best, and yet knows all too well that it's very unlikely that it will. Reluctantly fatalistic in the terms of his own life, Cygnus is perhaps one of the most encouraging individuals who it comes to the people around him. Where his position in life has been set since his birth, those that don't have the same sort of restrictions placed on their lives have the opportunity to excel to heights that they can only imagine. And Cygnus is happy to remind them of that. Instilled with a certain amount of ambition that he knows will probably go ignored, he started focusing that energy into others a couple of years ago. His housemates are a particular target of his reassurances and boosts to their confidence, Cygnus working to negate any doubts that they might have as to their own skills or abilities. The way Cygnus sees it, if someone he's encouraged succeeds, he does as well.
As a Black, Cygnus has inherited all of the same views that his family has held including that of pureblood superiority and a general disregard for muggles and muggleborns. Their presence in their world serves as nothing more, in Cygnus's mind, than as a mechanism to dilute the magical world with influences of the muggle. While he thinks purebloods are naturally superior, Cygnus would probably have absolutely no issue with muggleborns if they weren't so determined to hold onto the world which they left behind. A full embrace of the magical world without any certain hold overs from the muggle world would not only assure the stability of their culture, but it would also protect them from the sort of security breaches which might end them entirely. Cygnus is actually a strong supporter of bringing muggleborns into their world earlier than eleven years old. If they were brought in as soon as their magical capability was detected, fostered with a magical family and the memories of their parents altered so that they don't remember them, they wouldn't have any reason to feel a connection to the muggle world that might end up bringing down the magical one.
Cygnus has resigned himself to the one thing that most purebloods aren't able to. Muggleborns are here to stay. They just need to figure out some more practical way to deal with them.
Ideas for plot: → Muggleborn sympathy classes for purebloods → House rivalry pranks; prank wars between Gryffindor and Slytherin → Extensive Interrogations after basilisk attacks → Bombing runs on Hogsmeades during Hogsmeades weekend
